Edition 1

Functional Integrity

IP 65 Cable Junction Boxes with Functional Integrity!!!

Are you safe???

In a world where hazards are constantly on the rise due to rapid growth, industrialisation, globalisation, day-night constructions, and threat of terror – the challenges before the Fire and Rescue services are being increased day by day.

It is so vital to ensure no stone left unturned to achieve efficiency and effectiveness in handling the most severe emergencies.

The fire and rescue department face big challenges when there are fire accidents in multi-storeyed buildings, or fires in congested and over-populated urban areas with difficult access. Hence, in this modern world, it is very important to keep the safety circuits operational for a sufficient period in accordance with the national regulations governing the fire protection requirements for cable installations during exposure to fire.

In addition to a standard power supply, populated buildings like Departmental stores, Sports facilities, Hospitals, Airports, Railway Stations, Marriage Halls or Theatres etc generally also require an emergency power supply.

Study 1 : An international Standard testing curve based on real fire temperatures:

Besides Oxygen, burning material and heat, a fire needs time to develop. After a first fire has shown, the heating period is only 5 to 15 minutes when fire creates a flash over point at approx 500 deg. C which causes a huge air pressure, the fire ignites all surfaces in the room causing explosion.

The temperature during fire can exceed more than 1000 deg. C. and therefore a fire proof installation with functional integrity must withstand the air pressure and temperature more than 1000 deg. C.

In the event of fire, the functional integrity of emergency power supply must be guaranteed for a specific period of time such that emergency lighting, lifts, smoke extractors, alarms etc remain operational for a minimum of 30 minutes to a maximum of 90 minutes so that people can leave the building before the emergency or rescue operations start. 90 minutes are maximum since after that there is no necessity of  any emergency…

Study 2 : An example of a wrong but typical fire protection installation in a building ;

The above installation is from a public building. In this example, the fire proof cables ( orange colour) are installed between the normal cables. In case of fire, the plastic material used for normal cables may also burn the fire proof cables. The installation is completely against the rules and gives no security in case of fire.

Commonly, Brass and Alluminium Junction boxes are used for buildings with fire protection requirements however they are completely unsafe. Both these metals are having melting temperatures lesser than 1000 deg. C and they wont give any security when the temperature reaches above the 60 minutes barrier.

Hensel  introduces FK cable junction boxes which are IP 65 ( Jet water proof & dust proof ) according to IEC 60 998 – 2 – 5 , tested for functional integrity in the event of fire.FK cable junction boxes comply with these requirements when used together with type approved cables as well as suitable cable clamps or mounting devices.

The Fk range of functional integrity boxes are offered in two different material of construction;

FK 7 series in Duroplast
and,

FK 9 series in Sheet Steel

FK 7 Cable Junction boxes with functional integrity : Duroplastic

FK9 Cable Junction Boxes for Function Integrity : Sheet Steel

All the Functional integrity junction boxes carry special terminals made of Ceramic as they are suitable to withstand temperatures more than 1200 deg. C.

In the event of fire, the Hensel FK functional integrity boxes ensure everything is in place and the power supply remains functionally intact as shown below;

Total Safety for Construction Sites

Safe, Reliable & Economical Temporary Power Distribution Systems

Temporary electrical power distribution system in any construction site requires a special attention. A minor shock can be the shock of your life if it causes a serious burn or a fall.

Traditionally, the enclosures used for the system are sheet steel and some might agree for the use of a wooden board for the same. Just stop and have a look at some of these conventional installations, the picture will be clear. These are completely unsafe installations as the safety is compromised. Human lives are at stake. Every year Companies spend millions of rupees towards accident claims and insurance for casualties due to electrocutions.

If you are a general contractor, an operative builder, a sub – contractor, an event organiser or a project manager, working on a specific construction site, Safety and safe power are the important requirements for you. To enjoy a safe and reliable source for temporary power, you need to select a power distribution board which is completely insulated and shock proof and focus only on safety and which has a solid reputation in this field.

Hensel has a strong reputation in the Electrical industry and is the undisputed leader in Cable Junction boxes, Empty enclosures, cable glands, plug – sockets and its unique Modular Panels and Distribution systems.

After the success of modular panel enclosure systems, the company introduced a range of Assemblies for construction sites (ACS) in accordance with IEC 60439-4 for industries which were looking for a safety system for temporary power problems during maintenance. However the product became an instant hit with many builders, industries and infrastructure companies having projects in their hands and that were going under construction.

The Hensel – ACS is classified into three groups, viz, Cable drums, Solid Rubber and Polycarbonate.

Cable Drums: This ACS is made out of synthetic rubber and is suitable for normal welding loads up to 32A for single phase and three phases. Twenty different assemblies are available and are derived from four different sizes of Cable drums and are suitable for a maximum incomer of 5Cx 6sqmm cable of length 25metres. The outgoings are available via Insulated Industrial sockets fully protected with ELCB/MCBs. Degree of protection is IP44. These come with a sturdy and light weight handle due to which the assembly can be easily hand carried to any maintenance or project location.

Solid Rubber: They are made out of Hard Rubber or synthetic rubber. Seventeen customised assemblies are readily available and are made out of three different sizes
of  portable units. They are suitable for a maximum incomer of 63A, single phase and three phase as well. Degree of protection IP44 and IP67. Output is via Insulated Industrial plugs and sockets with the required MCB / ELCB protections. Comes with a sturdy handle for easy transportation. Trolley arrangements available on requests.

Polycarbonate ACS : This ACS system is the most commonly used system specially when the number of outgoing circuits and the incomer rating is more. The range varies from 16A upto 630A incomer and finds application almost in every construction project. The degree of protection is IP65. Most common ACS used in this range is a 63A FP Incomer and outgoings are 2nos of 32A three phase and 8nos of  16A single phase via the insulated plugs and sockets that are supplied along with the ACS.  There are 16 standard pre-wired combinations of the Polycarbonate ACS available as catalogue products.

Enysun - Professional Photovoltaic Distribution Systems

Optimised distributor solutions for photovoltaic systems

The market for photovoltaic systems is growing inexorably and becoming ever more important. In the meanwhile, installation of photovoltaic systems has already become a part of the standard repertoire of the electricians. However, the PV installation requires some rethinking during planning, dimensioning and component selection. In order to facilitate the work of the electrician and to ensure a maximum system availability, Hensel has developed standardised system solutions, which are fine tuned to the specific requirements of the PV installation.

Hensel is the leading, internationally operating vendor for electrical installation and power distribution systems with high innovative power. The German company is known world-wide for its distribution solutions which provide safe power distribution with their heavy duty properties. It is not a coincidence that

Hensel solutions are being used, for example, in large industrial and commercial enterprises world-wide. Decades of experience and the constant dialogue with the customers form the basis for the innovative solutions provided by the company.

Hensel started developing special installation solutions for the special requirements of a photovoltaic system quite early. The requirements for the interfaces between the individual components differ distinctly from the requirements for classical power distribution. The result is the ENYSUN distribution program, which offers correctly dimensioned distributors conforming to the standards in modular design to the electrician, which ensure safe operation at high system availability.

PV components

A PV system consists of various components, which must be electrically interconnected to the interfaces. The main components are PV modules and inverters.

To start with, several PV modules are interconnected to form PV strings. Several such strings then form a DC power supply unit, a so-called PV generator. Each PV generator supplies DC voltages of up to 1,000 V. The PV generators are connected via PV generator junction boxes to the inverters, which convert the direct current into alternating current.

Several inverters are again interconnected via inverter collectors. From there it is linked to the grid connection or the supply to the consumer.

For all these interfaces, Hensel offers specially developed distribution solutions, which are fine-tuned to the respective requirements.

Different requirements

The requirements for the various components are thereby very different.
Since the PV generator junction boxes installations are predominantly outdoors, the devices are exposed to many various effects. In order to ensure long-lasting high operating safety, they must be able to handle with climatic requirements such as sun, rain, heat, frost and UV radiation. At the same time they must be resistant to mechanical effects. Impact strength, protection against accidental contact and foreign bodies, corrosion resistance as well as burning behaviour make high demands on material and design.

They also make high demands distribution boards for power supply and measuring. Although they are usually located inside buildings and are thus protected, they also make high demands as regards safety, EMC compliance and maintainability.

PV generator junction boxes

PV components on the direct current side needs to be seen as placed under voltage, even if the system is separated from the alternating current side. A protection according to protection class II or equivalent should be used preferably. It is required, when, for example, the DC networks are not earthed.
In such a case, empty boxes which are tested in accordance with IEC 60 439 and fulfil the requirements of protection class II may only be used.
Attention: Cable junction boxes in accordance with IEC 60 670-22 may not be used, since this standard does not envisage products of the protection class II.

Within the ENYSUN product line, Hensel offers special PV generator junction boxes conforming to the standards for this area. The housings made from impact and UV resistant themoplastic are ready for connection and already pre-wired and equipped with over-voltage protection and are thus ready to use. Plug-in connections for the PV strings and the inverter also save installation time.

Inverter-collector

On the AC side, inverter collectors provide the connection between inverters and the power distribution. For this area, high flexibility is required in the installation, since the requirements differ from installation to installation.

Therefore Hensel offers the ENYSUN inverter collectors as modular housing sets, which can be individually customised for the respective environment.
Unlike the distributors in buildings, for which the simultaneity factor ranges from 0.3 to 0.6, it is 1 in photovoltaic systems. This must be taken into consideration when dimensioning the distributors. In case of wrong dimensioning, the dissipated power can lead to the equipment exceeding its maximum temperature, meaning that the protective equipment will trip at levels below the rated current.

ENYSUN PV inverter collectors from Hensel are characterised by devices set at a distance, additional ventilation slots and larger housings. The dissipation of the energy is thereby markedly improved and a safe operation is ensured.

Standard assembly aids for the optimum positioning on the DIN rail as well as for protection cover facilitate the assembly.

Connecting to the power supply network

An interface to the infrastructure must be present to be able to feed the generated power to the power supply network and to bill the same. For this purpose, distribution boards and switchgear assemblies are suitable in various different designs. The dimensioning depends on the one hand on the capacity of the PV system and on the other hand on the requirements of the electric power supply. Thus, the systems must offer place for the measuring instruments and the connections of the inverter collectors. In some cases, an isolator is also required, which can be effected manually or automatically by monitoring of the network parameters.

For this area, Hensel offers a broad spectrum of suitable solutions. In the area of the power distribution boards with measuring, the Hensel distribution solutions have likewise proved themselves. The wide Hensel product range ensures the optimum solution for every requirement.
